While I don't deny that the virus would spread incredibly quickly if it was airborne, I really don't think it would take hold that quickly if a fluid vector was required. Similar viruses such as HIV, Hep B or Hep C only spread as far as they do because they're shared by sharing needles (which generally requires non-cannabalistic people involved) or by unprotected sex, which I seriously doubt anybody would have with a zombie. The I Am Legend method seemed the most likely, albeit improbable.

Almost all deadly contagious virus' are one's that mutated from birds and pigs... so a mutant strain wouldn't be outrageous to consider at all. Virus' constantly mutate to infect more effectively so cross-species zombification would be even more deadly. Just saying.

Nope. Not all diseases that happen on animals, happen on humans and vice versa. Viruses are adapted to a certain type of genome. So: no, it highly improbable that it will pass to animals.

Zombies' purpose is actually to spread their virus, not necessarily to eat humans.
