I can understand if zombies don.t eat animals, but I still think that they just hunger for flesh. So what happens when all of the potential zombies are eaten and the rest of the uninfected are hidden or surviving, how they will feast? Seriously, I think the zombies would eat a dog or cat to satisfy their "hunger."

Zombies hunger for is not to be over-thought. It simply exists and is terrifying.

Zombies do not have to eat flesh to survive. All of their bodliy functions have shut down except for a few in the brain that causes them to walk, see, etc. The stomach doesn't break down the flesh, it just stays in the stomach until it gets to full and bursts. Also, if an animal were to get the virus they'd be dead in a couple of hours because their body wouldn't be able to handle the virus spreading up to the brain. All of my information is coming from The Zombie Survival Guide:)

We too think the animal would die if infected, though some of our very smart readers seem to think otherwise…

If human zombie rules apply to dogs, then they are going to be slow. They are naturally fragile, so you can literally kick him away. If they are somehow fast, then we can arrive to the obvious, scientific conclusion that we are, indeed, fucked.

Still: we do not want to encounter zombie dogs.

Most animals have a natural sense over disasters, mostly natural. If something is weird, they can realize it and escape, or try to fight. Zombies ain't strong, they can't be. Nor fast.

You: we deem zombie survival expert.

"Classic" zombies, the ones that came from the dead, need brains for a supernatural reason, I don't think it is possible to afirm that they can eat animal brain. "New" zombies, the ones from viruses and other sources, need meat, or simply to kill. So, eventually, they will attack animals. The science behind zombies. Fascinating.

straight-razor-cabaret

But is just any old kind of meat acceptable to the zombie? If so, why do they not turn to animals (dumber, slower) to begin with? Are zombies smart enough to be discerning eaters?

There will eventually be only a certain amount of survivors unless some cure was found. If zombies need "brains" to survive they may have to eat animals. Why does this not make sense... Unless you're assuming zombies can survive only on humans but even then humans survive on animals now. So thinking zombies wouldn't eat animals is kinda illogical. Besides.. never can be to careful right?

You present a solid case for animal-consuming zombies.

there was a post earlier about animals and whether or not a virus would affect them and if zombies would go for animals or not.... I would theorize that "zombies," for the purposes of this argument and many movies I've seen, just go for live meat. One way or annother I would think they would try and eat animals, but I think they would have problems catching wild animals. Also as far as zombie animals, viruses affect different species in various ways, and the body would have to be intact enough.

madmurdoc21

Nice speculation, but we still want to see some solid science on this.

You seem certain that the zombie virus would not affect animals and that zombies would not attack animals. Regardless of whether it is true or not, wouldn't it be wise to take precautions just in case? I would rather be wary of something and proved wrong then to be surprise attack by a zombie chihuahua. But in reference to one earlier entry, human and animal brains are not so different as to be unaffected by similar viruses. Things like rabies, avian/swine flu, mad cow, can occur in both brains.

ternionsedifice

Actually, you have a great point. Regardless as to what we THINK the science says, we should take precautions against zombified animals. Thanks for the heads up.

I think zombies just can't catch animals as easy as people. If a horde of zombies roamed into a zoo you don't think they would try to eat everything (an probably get torn apart by the larger meals)

refinedsavagery

We think this might simply be wanton speculation. Prove it and we’ll buy it. Until then: zombies eat only humans.

Actually I think zombies would at some point turn to eating animals such as horses, living blood and meat. Otherwise the zombies will not have enough living to live off of.. especially if they're acting on animal instincts. How long could a zombie survive without eating?

foxybait

And what makes you think that zombies would turn to animals for survival? Do you have relevant information to share with us?

the basis of the zombie mythos is the resurrection of human beings with nothing but their most basic primal instincts intact. Therefore any animal would be left unaffected by a zombie because the way an animals brain works is already devolved to the point where it relies on those instincts. Am I correct in saying this or do you have a different theory?

eddyfuckincrash

You are correct. Hard science supports your smart reply.

I would like to think that animals could not be infected, but I don't know. I mean, in Resident Evil, the dobermans were infected.. and I would assume that since they were dogs, they would be more prone to attack any living thing.. kind of like dogs under the influence with rabies, only, more serious. And also, in Resident Evil 3, the crows got infected from where they feasted on the dead bodies. So, if a predator consumes the scavenger, would that cause the virus to spread amongst species?

whaddup-bro

We agree, but there’s no one clear answer on this - what do you all think?

zombies will eat animals but they do not crave it nearly as much as human flesh

robbyhouston

You are correct.

Actually, no animals will eat zombies. I read The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks (<3) and it says that no animals will even go near zombies, they flee the area when they catch a scent, which a tip that humans can use to tell if an infected is near! Love ya, Em!

renegade-robot

Excellent answer! But do zombies eat animals?

would animals such as alligators, Purana eat zombies? If so what would happen to the animal?

Hot damn that’s a great question - we say yes!
